Overview

Concerning their design, the main change is the rounded corners. It still has black rectangular body with top cover to hide the cooling fan.

LEDs are aggregated into a central ovoid-shaped cluster. It is slightly recessed into the fixture body and it is highly appreciated : it avoids direct light into your eyes when you look at the tank. An optional visor enhances this protection for your eyes.

Mounting solutions

Red Sea offer three optional mounting systems :

• Mounting arm to the tank glass
• Hanging kit
• Pendant for several ReefLED. 4 models available for 75 to 180 cm tanks

Optics

As LEDs form an unique central ovoid cluster, a big optic lenses covers it all. It allows the spread of the whole power of the fixture from a central point. It has 3 main effects :

• The mix of colours is insured by the proximity of the different LEDs colours.
• The power is concentrated and it allows high PAR values under the fixture.
• Shimmering effect is high : you will observe water surface waves on your reef.

LED composition

LED composition is not really announced but this new generation has improved UV, violet and blue domain. It is called « Reef-Spec » Blue. A white channel is also present.

This leads to the several spectrawe measured :

• With 19 000 Kelvin setup (we recommend it according to trials on our testing tank), at full power :

• With 23 000 Kelvin setup at 100% power :

• To go further, we measured spectrum at 8000,12000 and 15000K for hobbyists who prefer warmer light :

We observe with 19000 and 23000 Kelvin setups that emission spikes match the absorption spikes of chlorophylls a and c. White LEDs complete the spectrum.

PAR measurements

After assessing the light spectrum, we measured intensity of light that is beneficial for coral growth, specifically using PAR (more accurately referred to as PPFD). The intensity is measured in micro-moles of photons per square meter per second (µmol photons/m²/sec).

Measurement Conditions: Intensity was recorded with all channels set to 100% power (shown in the first three plots) as well as under a program we typically use for a mixed reef tank (shown in the last three plots).

Depth Measurements: Measurements were conducted at depths of 20, 40, and 60 cm under the fixture.

Measurement Area: An area of 70 x 60 cm was used for the intensity measurements.

Measurement Environment:  Measurements were taken in open air, as the light reflection on the water surface can vary significantly depending on water flow.

Results : Here are the main observations we can have. All PAR measurements are shown in the plots below for more details.

• 19000K – Full power : We measure higher than 800 PAR values at 20 com under the fixture. 300 PAR Values are measurable on almots 40 x 40 cm area.At  40 cm from the fixture, PAR is higher than 200 on a 30×30 cm approximatively. Almost the whole testing area shows >100 PAR values. And 60 cm under the fixture, we measured >100 PAR on 60 x 40 cm.

• 23000K – full power : values are very similar. It enlightens the Red Sea argument : total power stays high even with white LEDs OFF. So PAR values are around 900 at 20 cm right under the fixture, and PAR values are higher than 300 on 50 x 40 area cm. 40 cm below the ReefLED G2 155, PAR is higher than 100 on almost the whole testing area. And at 60 cm, this 100+ PAR area is reduced to 50 x 40 cm.

Heatsink

More technical details

Whether it is set on 19000 or 23 000K up, the electric consumption is around 110W, so close to the 115 of the reference of the product. Power factor, the electrical efficiency, is 0,94 : it can be translated as « 94 % of the energy consumption is efficiently used ».

Reefbeat App

Once the fixture is plugged on, you can easily connect it to your smartphone thanks to Reefbeat app. It only needs a few steps :

• Add a device : chose the kind of device you add
• The « connectivity » red light behind the fixture must blink. If it is not the case, push the black button on the left of the cable during 5 sec.
• Connect your smartphone to the ReefLED wifi network (password is « password »).
• Chose your home wifi network and add the password.

That’s it ! Your ReefLED is now connected to your Reefbeat environment. You can now make a first easy setup by choosing the colour temperature between 8 and 23 000K and sunrise time. You will be able to adjust it later.

With these basics setup, the light goes on on 1h period, is in full intensity mode during 11h and switches off slowly during 1h. And then a 3h lunar light period completes the program.

The homepage gives you an overview of the actual state of the light : color temperature, intensity and moonlight, running effects (acclimatation, clouds, moonlight), connectivity, and a quick action button to activate the photography mode.

By clicking on the device, you will land on a page showing the program plot, and below, several features :

• Calendar : chose between setting up the same program everyday, or you can change the light for each day.
• Acclimatation : dim the light of a chosen percentage, during a chosen perido until the light reaches the whole power of you program.
• Lunar mode : setup a whole 28 days lunar light cycle instead of a constant lunar light everyday.
• Delayed Sunrise : delay the sunrise time between several lights on a tank
• Manual : setup manually the light for a certain period
• Programs library : find your personal and pre-registered programs

To edit a program, push the pencil button above the program plot, then the pencil on the left time period you want to change. You can then choose timing, colour temperature and intensity.

Here appears one nice feature of ReefLED G2. Thanks to their experience, Red Sea establish standards corals light needs. They integrated their knowledges into the application. To avoid corals light surexposition, each time period of your program has an exposition percentage of the maximal recommended exposition. It takes into account the light temperature, the intensity and the duration. You can then know if your program exceeds recommended daily light exposition, or if you can optimise it.

General information

PAR and spectrum measurements were conducted using a spectroradiometer with a range of 190 to 850 nm and a resolution of 0.5 nm. Heatsink measurements were taken with a FLIR thermal camera, and electrical features were evaluated using a power consumption socket.

Présentation

La Maxspect Ethereal Infinite est une rampe LED pour aquariums récifaux d’une puissance maximale de 230W. Côté forme, on retrouve la touche Maxspect avec une rampe rectangulaire, mais fine. Elle mesure 33 x 25,5 x 3,25cm (L x l x h). Nous allons voir ce que cache ce format plus loin dans cet article. Elle pèse 1 613g.

Sur le dessus de la rampe, une zone dispose de boutons d’action simples, ainsi que les voyants permettant de connaître le statut de la rampe, notamment l’alimentation et la connexion wifi. Au milieu, une grille protège le ventilateur de refroidissement.

Petite fonctionnalité « gadget » mais originale : la possibilité d’instaurer une lumière d’ambiance autour de cette zone avec de nombreux modes d’animation et de couleur possibles.

Solutions d’installation

A l’achat, un pied de fixation à la vitre de l’aquarium (de 10 à 20 mm d’épaisseur) est fourni. Son installation se fait simplement par emboitement et serrage de 8 vis en tout et pour tout. Sa finition est soignée et il paraît très solide. Le petit + : la gaine en silicone qui permet un passage de câble soigné.

En option, vous pouvez acheter un kit de câbles de suspension.

Composition en LED

C’est ici que commence notre pic de curiosité. 276 LED équipent cette rampe ! On pourrait penser à des LED unitaires de faible puissance, au rendement moins efficace surtout sur une grande hauteur d’eau, mais non. Il s’agit bien de cellules de puissance, mais bridées pour profiter de leur nombre. Cela a pour avantage d’avoir une bonne répartition de la puissance de chaque couleur de LED sur une plus grande surface, améliorer le mélange des couleurs et augmenter leur durée de vie, car en fonctionnant à faible puissance, elles produisent moins de chaleur qui leur est fatale si elle n’est pas contrôlée.

Il y a donc 10 couleurs de LED réparties selon 8 canaux pilotables :

Canal A : 12 LED UV (390/400 nm) + 12 LED violet (410-420nm) + 12 LED bleu profond (435-440 nm)

Canal B : 96 LED bleu royal (450-455nm)

Canal C : 72 LED bleu clair (460-470nm)

Canal D : 12 LED cyan (470-480 nm)

Canal E : 12 LED verte (520-525 nm)

Canal F : 24 LED blanc froid (9000-11000 Kelvin)

Canal G : 12 LED blanc chaud (2800-3200 Kelvin)

Canal H : 12 LED rouge (660-665 nm)

Voici le spectre d’émission relatif de chaque canal mesuré par nos soins (cliquez pour zoomer) :

Aussi, nous avons mesuré le spectre d’émission de la rampe avec tous les canaux à pleine puissance, mais aussi d’un spectre que nous trouvons satisfaisant pour la croissance et la coloration d’un bac récifal mixte. Attention toutefois à ajuster la puissance selon les dimensions de votre aquarium, vos nutriments et l’état d’acclimatation de vos coraux vis-à-vis de la lumière. La rampe offre une multitude de possibilités pour moduler le spectre et l’intensité pour correspondre aux besoins de nos protégés à polypes.

Ces spectres d’émission sont comparés au spectre d’absorption de la lumière par les pigments photosynthétiques et photoprotecteurs (diadino) des coraux.

On observe une forte émission dans le domaine des violets / bleus / cyans, ainsi qu’un petit sursaut dans le rouge, ce qui correspond aux absorptions principales des pigments chlorphylliens notamment.

Optiques

C’est un autre point de curiosité : les optiques de diffusion de lumière innovantes. Avec un tel nombre de LED, Maxspect les a disposées en 4 bandeaux de part et d’autre du ventilateur central. Pour simplifier la structure optique, des « gouttières » optiques recouvrent ces rubans de LED et concentrent leur diffusion selon un angle de 90°.

Mesures d’intensité : PAR / PFFD

Après les spectres place aux mesures de puissance, d’intensité lumineuse utile à la croissance des coraux : le PAR (ou plus scientifiquement correct, le PPFD). Il est exprimé en umol de photos/m2/sec, l’unité standard. Les mesures ont été faites avec l’ensemble des canaux à 100%, puis avec le spectre testé sur notre aquarium, à 20, 40 et 60 cm sous la rampe, et sur une surface de 80 x 60 cm . Les mesures ont été faites à l’air libre, sur table de mesure, sans vitres qui réfléchiraient la lumière. De plus, la pénétration dans l’eau avec le remous en surface est très différente d’un bac à l’autre, et même au sein du même bac. Ainsi, les mesures sont comparables d’une condition à l’autre et d’une rampe à l’autre.

Résultats : Voici quelques points remarquables sur les mesures. Les surfaces données sont approximatives compte-tenu de la résolution de mesures (tous les 5 cm).

Les valeurs de PAR mesurées sont élevées, le pari du grand nombre de LED utilisées à puissance réduite est réussi.

A pleine puissance on observe :

• 20 cm sous la rampe – Des valeurs supérieures à 1000 sur 30 x20 cm.
• 20 cm sous la rampe – Des valeurs supérieures à 500 sur presque 60 x 40 cm, et même 50 cm de large aux abords de la rampe.
• 20 cm sous la rampe – Le PAR reste supérieur à 100 sur presque toute la surface (des zones de 10×5 cm environ dans les angles exclues).
• 40 cm sous la rampe – Une surface de 40 x 40 cm est éclairée à plus de 400 de PAR
• 40 cm sous la rampe – Une valeur supérieur à 150 sur presque l’ensemble de la surface étudiée.
• 60 cm sous la rampe – Le PAR est supérieur à 100 sur toute la surface et à 200 sur presque 60 x 60 cm.

Avec le spectre qui nous satisfait sur notre bac récifal mixte de test, on obtient :

• 20 cm sous la rampe – Un PAR supérieur à 1000 sous la rampe.
• 20 cm sous la rampe – Un PAR supérieur à 300 sur presque 50 x 50 cm
• 40 cm sous la rampe – Des valeurs supérieures à 200 sur presque 50 x 50 cm
• 60 cm sous la rampe – Un PAR supérieur à 100 sur presque toute la surface d’étude à l’exception des angles.

Dissipation thermique

La dissipation thermique est un point important dans la conception d’un éclairage LED. Les propriétés électriques des LED induisent une production de chaleur lors de leur fonctionnement, il est alors important que cette chaleur soit dissipée dans l’air ambiant.

Voici deux images thermiques prises sur la Maxspect Ethereal Infinite après 10 h de fonctionnement à puissance maximale dans une pièce à 20°C.

On observe des points locaux à 80°C, mais les moyennes sur la surface totale ne sont pas alarmantes. Compte-tenu des mesures de PAR, l’utilisation à 100% ne serait possible que sur des énormes aquariums. En l’utilisant à une puissance adaptée à la majeure partie des aquariums des passionnés, la dissipation thermique semble efficace.

Autres caractéristiques

Nous avons également mesuré l’efficacité électrique de la rampe. Elle utilise en réalité 210 W à pleine puissance contre les 230 annoncés, pour 215,8 consommés. Ce qui nous donne une efficacité de 97%.

Application Syna-G Cloud

La Maxspect Ethereal Infinite est pilotable et programmable depuis l’application Maxspect Syna-G Cloud. Après son installation, il faut donc commencer par créer un compte. Il faut juste donner une adresse mail, un mot de passe et cliquer sur un lien de confirmation envoyé sur l’adresse mail utilisée pour le compte Maxspect.
Ensuite, connectez-vous simplement sur l’application, créez un aquarium sur votre compte, autorisez la détection d’appareils autour de vous. Vous pouvez alors ajouter la rampe à votre univers connecté Maxspect. Si la rampe n’apparaît pas dans la liste des appareils environnants, vous pouvez réinitialiser la rampe en appuyant sur les 2 flèches sur le dessus de la rampe. Vous devez ensuite la connecter à votre réseau Wifi domestique.

Vous arrivez alors sur la page d’accueil de votre aquarium avec les différents appareils qui y sont connectés. Sélectionnez la rampe à programmer.

Vous arrivez sur la page générale de gestion de la rampe. Vous y découvrez 2 menus supérieurs : gestion manuelle ou automatique. Le bouton d’action pour éteindre d’un clic la rampe, un réglage rapide basé sur la température de couleur d’éclairage, le bouton pour activer/éteindre/programmer la lumière d’ambiance.

En mode de gestion manuel, en dessous se trouvent le graphique de spectre du réglage actuel et les boutons de réglage des canaux. Puis un mode de réglage simple et d’autres options.

En mode Automatique, vous observerez le graphique chronologique du programme en cours. Mais aussi des options d’instauration du cycle lunaire, d’un mode d’acclimatation à l’éclairage et un mode économie d’énergie.

Pour gérer votre programme, vous pouvez soit cliquer sur les points sur l’axe des abscisses, soit cliquer sur les flèches droite et gauche sous le graphique. L’horaire du point sélectionné apparaît au milieu et vous pourrez le modifier en cliquant dessus. Dessus, sont affichés le pourcentage de chaque, et la possibilité d’ajouter ou supprimer un point, simuler le programme en accélérer, et enfin le bouton « transmettre » pour envoyer le programme à la rampe.

Le petit plus

Comme évoqué dans l’article annonçant sa sortie, la Maxspect Ethereal Infinite dispose d’une petite fonctionnalité pratique. Il est possible de la redresser à la verticale sur son pied de fixation pour faciliter l’entretien de l’aquarium, et notamment accéder au fond du bac sans être gêné par la présence de(s) la rampe(s) sur la surface de l’aquarium. Et en le faisant, elle(s) s’éteigne(nt) automatiquement ! Pour cela, il suffit d’activer la fonctionnalité sur l’application.

Overview

The Maxspect Ethereal Infinite is a 230W LED fixture for reef tanks. It is a thin (3,23 cm) rectangular fixture of 33 x 25,5 cm area. It weighs 1613 g.

On the top of the fixture stands a centreal area with quick action buttons, LED indicators (power and wifi). In the middle, a grid protects the cooling fan.

An extra fun feature of the Ethereal Infinite is its ambiance light around this central zone. There is a lot of colors and animations possible.

Mounting solutions

A mounting arm is directly sold with the fixture. It is suitable for 10 to 20 mm thick glass. It is easy to assemble with 8 screws.It has a neat finish et is sturdy. Bonus : a silicon gutter allows a clean cable management on the mounting arm.

You can otherwise buy extra hanging kits if you prefer it.

LED Composition

The number of diodes is one point of our curiosity. We can think that they are low power LEDS, that are less effective on greater water column height, but they are not ! Indeed, they are high-power LEDs but used at lower power. It has several advantages :

• Better colour mixing with more sources of each colour
• Wider light spreading with larger area covered by LEDs
• Greater lifespan as they will not produce excessive heat

There are 10 different colours divided into 8 channels :

• Channel A : 12 UV LEDs (390/400 nm) + 12 violet LEDs (410-420nm) + 12 deep blue LEDs (435-440 nm)
• Channel B : 96 Royal blue LEDs (450-455nm)
• Channel C : 72 Light blue LEDs (460-470nm)
• Channel D : 12 Cyan LEDs (470-480 nm)
• Channel E : 12 Green LEDs (520-525 nm)
• Channel F : 24 Cool White LEDs (9000-11000 Kelvin)
• Channel G : 12 Warm White LEDs (2800-3200 Kelvin)

We also measured full power spectrum, and a spectrum of the setup that we find interesting for mixed-reef tank. It allows corals growth and nice coloration. Be careful, the total power has to be adapted to your tank’s size, your nutrients levels and the light acclimatisation state of your corals. The Maxspect Ethereal allows a huge amount of possibilities to modulate the spectrum and the intensity to answer to your corals needs.

These two spectra are plotted against major photosynthetical pigments and photoprotective pigments (diadino).

We notice a strong emission in violet/blue/cyan domain and a small spike in the red corresponding to majors pigments absorption spikes.

Optics

It is another feature that triggers our curiosity : the optics. With this high amount of LEDs, Maxspect displayed them in 4 strips from each side of the central cooling fan. To simplify optics, 4 « gutters » overlay the LEDs and concentrating their power into a 90° diffusion cone.

A light shield protects your eyes from direct light. Very convenient and comfortable.

PAR values are high, and the bet to use numerous LED at lower power that they can is winning.

At Full power :

• 20 cm under the fixture – We measure above 1000 PAR values on 30 x 20 cm area.
• 20 cm under the fixture – We measure >500 PAR values on almost 60 x 40 cm, and even 50 cm wide area closest to the fixture.
• 20 cm under the fixture – PAR stays above 100 on the whole area except from approximatively 10×5 cm in the corners
• 40 cm under the fixture – PAR is above 400 on 40 x40 cm.
• 40 cm under the fixture – PAR is above 150 on almost on the whole surface
• 60 cm under the fixture – PAR is above 100 on the whole area and above 200 on almost 60×60 cm

With the spectrum we find interesting on mixed-reef tank :

• 20 cm under the fixture – PAR stays above 1000 under the fixture
• 20 cm under the fixture – It also stays above 300 on almost 50 x 50 cm
• 40 cm under the fixture – >200 values are measured on almost 50 x 50 cm
• 60 cm under the fixture – PAR stays above 100 on almost the whole area except from corners.

Heatsink

The heatsink is a vital component in the design of light fixtures. LEDs generate heat as a byproduct of their electrical properties, and it is essential for this heat to be dissipated into the surrounding air to ensure the longevity of the LEDs.
Here are thermal pictures taken on the Maxspect Ethereal Infinite. They have been taken after 10 hours running at full power in a 20°C room.

We notice some local hot points above 80°C but mean temperatures are not alarming. According to PAR measurements, except for really big tanks, no one will use it at 100 %. So we can assume that heat sink is effective on this fixture.

More technical details

Here are electrical values to go further.

The total power is 210,6 W for 215,8 really consumed. It results into a power factor of 0,97 (so an efficiency of 97%).

Syna-G Cloud App

The Maxspect Ethereal Infinite is easily programmable with Syna-G Cloud App. After downloading it, you have to create an account. For this, you only need to add a mail address and choose a password. You will receive a confirmation message on your mail address. Then you have to create a tank, and search nearby devices. If it is not found, you have to press during 5 seconds the two arrows buttons on the fixture. You have to connect it to your home wifi network to finish its connexion.

Now you land on the homepage of the tank where all connected Maxspect devices on it are shown.

When you click on the Ethereal Infinite, you land on the following screen where you can find :

• The Manual or Auto mode switch
• The fast ON/OFF switch
• The possibility to easily set it up by choosing a given Correlated Color Temperature (CCT)
• The menu to setup or switch off the ambiance light on the fixture.
• In manual mode, below you can find  the 8 channels cursors. You also have the possibility to add a timer to this manual setting. After this time period, the auto mode programme will run back again.
• In Auto mode, you can find the 24h program. You can adjust it by clicking on each time point, add or delete them, simulate the whole program and send/save it to the fixture. You can add a cloud simulation effect.
• There is also an « Easy setting mode ». It allows to use pre-saved programs according to main corals types.
• Acclimatation mode is available to let your corals adapt to this new light. It reduces of a chosen percentage the whole power of your program on a given period.

A pleasant feature

As announced at its launch, the Maxspect Ethereal has a little feature that is practical in everyday reefkeeping experience. You can lift it up vertically on the mounting arm, and when you do so, it automatically switches off. For this, you only have one slider to activate on the app.
